Etsy Listing Photos and the Amazon Set That Does Not Translate

The short answer

Etsy recommends at least 2,000 pixels on the shortest side and a landscape frame, which is the opposite constraint to Amazon's square. The bigger problem is not the crop: the callout arrows, spec badges and hard white backgrounds that convert on Amazon actively work against you on Etsy, where the visual signal buyers are reading is that a person made this. Keep the scale reference and the detail shots, drop the infographic grammar.

An Amazon image set uploaded straight to Etsy usually fails twice. First technically: Etsy crops toward landscape and your square design loses its edges in the thumbnail. Then, more expensively, it fails on tone. The arrows, badges, bold sans headlines and hard white backgrounds that make an Amazon gallery convert are exactly the signals an Etsy buyer reads as mass-produced. On a marketplace whose entire premise is that a person made the thing, looking manufactured is not a neutral cost.

The specs, and where the published numbers disagree

Etsy recommends listing photos of at least 2,000 pixels on the shortest side, in JPG, PNG or GIF. Beyond that, the guidance in circulation is inconsistent enough that it is worth being explicit about what is settled and what is not.

SettledDisputed
Resolution2,000 px minimum on the shortest side
FrameLandscape recommended; 2700 x 2025 is the commonly cited targetThe exact thumbnail crop ratio; 4:3, 5:4 and 4:5 all appear in current guides
File sizeAround 1 MB is safe and universally advisedThe hard ceiling; 1 MB, 10 MB and 50 MB are all published
Photo countEtsy raised the limit from 10 to 20 in 2025Plenty of live guidance still says 10
VideoOne per listing, 5 to 15 seconds

The practical resolution: build at 2700 x 2025 or larger in landscape, export JPEG at roughly 1 MB, and keep anything that must be legible small away from the outer edges. That survives every version of the crop guidance simultaneously, which is more useful than picking a side in an argument Etsy has not settled publicly.

What the gallery arguesSpecification, comparison, objection handlingCraft, material, context, the person behind it

That last row is the whole page. Amazon's gallery is a sales argument delivered in bullet-point form; Etsy's is closer to a small editorial shoot. Both are trying to reduce uncertainty, but the uncertainty is different. An Amazon shopper is asking whether this is the right spec at the right price. An Etsy shopper is largely asking whether the thing is as nice in life as it looks, and whether it will fit where they intend to put it.

What survives the translation

Etsy's own seller handbook points sellers at a mix of photo types rather than a single hero, including a studio shot on a plain, well-lit background, a lifestyle shot with the item in use or in context, and a scale reference against a hand, a ruler or a familiar object. Those three overlap almost exactly with the three highest-value images in an Amazon set.

Carries over, restyled

  • Scale references — the single best returns-preventer in both places
  • Dimension information, if drawn rather than annotated
  • Detail and texture close-ups of material, stitching, grain, finish
  • What is included, shot as a flat lay rather than an exploded diagram
  • Variation and colourway groupings

Leave on Amazon

  • Callout arrows and numbered feature badges
  • Competitor comparison tables
  • Bold sans headlines stacked across the top third
  • Cut-out product floating on hard white
  • Certification and award badges as graphic furniture

Dimensions deserve a note of their own. Size confusion drives returns on Etsy just as it does on Amazon, and the impulse is to solve it with the Amazon answer: a technical diagram with leader lines and millimetre labels. On Etsy, a photograph of the item beside a coffee cup, a hand or a standard A4 sheet does the same job and does not break the register. If you need exact figures as well, put them in a caption-style corner rather than across the middle of the frame.

Where Graflio helps here, and where it does not

Graflio starts from an Amazon ASIN or listing URL, so if you sell the same or a similar product on Amazon, the research pass gives you something real to work with: the recurring complaints in your reviews, the questions buyers ask, the objections worth answering. Those transfer to Etsy even though the styling does not, and knowing that eleven reviews mention the strap being shorter than expected is useful regardless of which marketplace you are photographing for.

Three honest limits. The studio canvas is square, and exports are 2160 x 2160, so if you want Etsy's recommended landscape frame you will crop or recompose the artwork elsewhere rather than in Graflio. There is no Etsy listing import, so nothing here reads an Etsy shop. And the brand kit is one per account, so an agency running several Etsy shops cannot keep a separate kit per client.

There is also a policy line worth respecting. Graflio composites your real product photograph and uses generation for scene and background layers, not to invent the product, which matters more on Etsy than anywhere else: Etsy's Creativity Standards require sellers to disclose generative AI use and to list AI-generated work under "Designed by" rather than "Made by", and listing photographs are expected to show the actual item. Where AI-assisted photo editing sits relative to that line is genuinely contested in the guidance published as of August 2026, so read Etsy's policy directly before building a workflow on any summary of it.

Who should build an Etsy set from an Amazon one

If you sell the same SKU in both places and the product is functional — a tool, a storage box, a pet accessory, an electronics case — adapt the Amazon set. The information is the same, the restyle is an afternoon, and the buyer's questions overlap heavily. If your Etsy listing is genuinely handmade, one-of-a-kind, or sold substantially on the maker's story, do not adapt anything. Shoot it properly, use the twenty photo slots for angles, context and process, and treat the Amazon set as a source of arguments rather than a source of images. The tell is simple: if a photograph of the item in someone's home would sell it better than a diagram of its features, Etsy is not asking for an infographic and you should not send one.

Common questions

What size should Etsy photos be?

At least 2,000 pixels on the shortest side, landscape where possible, around 1 MB as JPEG. 2700 x 2025 is the size most consistently recommended.

Will my square Amazon images work on Etsy?

They will upload, but Etsy's thumbnail crop leans landscape and will trim the sides. Anything important at the edge of a square design disappears in search results.

Are infographics allowed on Etsy?

Allowed, yes — Etsy does not restrict text on listing photos the way Amazon restricts it on the main image. Whether they help is a different question, and usually the answer is that one scale or detail image does more than five annotated ones.

How many photos should an Etsy listing have?

Etsy permits up to 20. Use enough to cover a clean studio shot, the item in use, a scale reference and a close detail; past that, add photos only when they answer a question a buyer actually has.

Does Etsy allow AI-generated product images?

Etsy's Creativity Standards require disclosure of generative AI and reclassification from "Made by" to "Designed by" for AI-generated work, and listing photos are expected to show the actual item. Published interpretations of how that applies to AI-assisted editing conflict, so check Etsy's current policy rather than a summary.
