Shopify Product Image Sizes and What Transfers from Amazon
Shopify accepts up to 5000 × 5000 px or 25 MP and 20 MB per file, with 2048 × 2048 px the common recommendation. There is no white-background rule and no text ban, so the binding constraint is your theme's aspect ratio and, if you feed Google Shopping, Google's no-overlay policy on the primary image.
Shopify imposes almost no rules on product images: no white-background mandate, no frame-fill percentage, no text ban. The limits are technical — 20 MB per file, up to 5000 × 5000 px or 25 megapixels — and everything else is decided by your theme. That freedom is why Amazon sets rarely transfer cleanly. An Amazon gallery is six square images that argue a case to a stranger mid-search; a Shopify product page is a page you already own, next to copy you wrote, for someone who arrived on purpose.
The technical limits, and where the real constraints live
| Shopify | Amazon listing | |
|---|---|---|
| Max file size | 20 MB | 10 MB |
| Max dimensions | 5000 × 5000 px / 25 MP | 10,000 px longest side |
| Recommended | 2048 × 2048 px square | 1600 px+ longest side for zoom |
| Background | Anything | Main image: pure white RGB 255,255,255 |
| Text on the first image | Allowed | Prohibited on the main image |
| Formats | PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, SVG, HEIC, TIFF, BMP, PSD | JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF |
| Who enforces | Your theme | Amazon, automatically |
Shopify generates a responsive srcset from whatever you upload, so a phone downloads a smaller derivative rather than your 2048 px original. That means uploading larger than you need costs storage, not page speed. It also means the version a shopper sees on mobile is downscaled, which is the real reason small type dies on Shopify exactly as it does on Amazon.
Aspect ratio is the decision, not resolution
Shopify does not crop your product images on the product page, but collection grids do enforce a shape, and which shape depends on the theme setting. Pick one aspect ratio and apply it to every featured image in the catalogue. If one product is 2048 × 2048 and the next is 2048 × 1500, the grid renders them at different heights and the page looks broken in a way nobody can name but everyone notices.
Square 1:1 at 2048 × 2048 px is the safe default and matches an Amazon set, which is convenient. Portrait 4:5 (1600 × 2000 px) is increasingly common because it fills more of a phone screen and matches social crops. Both work. Mixing them does not. Whatever you choose, the featured image is the one that has to survive the grid crop; secondary images are shown at full aspect on the product page in most themes.
What carries over from an Amazon set, and what does not
Carries over
- The product cut-out itself, at full resolution
- Dimension diagrams and size charts, unchanged
- What's-in-the-box and materials images
- The palette, type and iconography of the brand kit
- Comparison logic, if you sell the alternatives yourself
Has to be rebuilt
- The white-background main image: it is a marketplace rule, not a good hero
- Anything with Amazon-specific badges, review counts or Prime references
- Dense feature-callout images that repeat copy already on your page
- Any image sized to Amazon's square when your theme is portrait
- Comparison charts naming competitors you do not stock
The important reframe: on Amazon the images have to do the whole job because the copy is bullets in a small font that most shoppers skim. On your own store the images share the work with a page you control, which means fewer images doing more specific things. Five or six well-chosen assets on Shopify usually beat a transplanted nine-image Amazon set.
The rules Shopify does not impose but your ad channels do
This is where sellers get caught. Shopify itself will accept a product image with a "50% OFF" badge burned in. Google Merchant Center will not: its policy requires an unobstructed view of the product on the primary image, with no promotional text, watermarks, logos or badges, and disapproves products that carry them. Minimums are 100 × 100 px for general products and 250 × 250 px for apparel, well below anything you would actually ship.
So if your Shopify catalogue feeds Google Shopping, Meta or a marketplace, your featured image is effectively governed by the strictest channel in the set, and that channel is usually Google. The practical pattern: keep the featured image clean and free of overlays, and put the infographic work in image slots two onwards, exactly as Amazon forces you to do anyway.
How Graflio fits
Graflio starts from an Amazon ASIN or listing URL, so its natural use here is the seller who sells the same product in both places. The research pass reads the live listing, its reviews and the surrounding best sellers, and the brand kit it produces carries to a Shopify set: the same palette, type and composited product cut-out, re-laid-out at your chosen aspect ratio rather than resized into it.
Because every image opens as layers, moving an Amazon set to Shopify is an edit rather than a regeneration: drop the Amazon-specific badges, change the canvas to 4:5 and reflow, swap the headline. Export is flat raster at the exact dimensions you need, under Shopify's 20 MB ceiling with room to spare.
The honest limits. Graflio has no Shopify app and no direct publish; you download and upload. If you sell only on Shopify and have never had an Amazon listing, the research pass has much less to work with, because it is built around a live listing with reviews. And a general design tool will beat us on anything that is not a product image, which on a Shopify store is a lot: banners, collection headers, email, the homepage.
How to decide
Selling the same SKUs on Amazon and Shopify: build the Amazon set first, because it is the constrained one, then rebuild the Shopify featured images clean and reuse the diagrams. Shopify-only with good photography: you may not need a generation tool at all, just a consistent crop and a size chart. Shopify-only with supplier photos and no budget: this is where a tool earns its place, because the gap between a raw supplier JPEG and a usable product page is exactly what compositing and a brand kit close. Feeding Google Shopping: decide the featured-image rule first, then design everything else after it.
Common questions
What size should Shopify product images be?
2048 × 2048 px square is the common recommendation: large enough for zoom, small enough not to waste storage. Shopify accepts up to 5000 × 5000 px or 25 megapixels and up to 20 MB per file. The more important rule is that every featured image in the catalogue uses the same aspect ratio, or your collection grid renders at inconsistent heights.
Can I use my Amazon listing images on Shopify?
Partly. Dimension diagrams, size charts, what's-in-the-box images and materials callouts transfer directly. The white-background main image should be replaced, since pure white is an Amazon requirement rather than a good storefront hero, and anything referencing Prime, review counts or Amazon badges has to go. If your theme uses a portrait crop, square Amazon images need re-laying-out rather than resizing.
Does Shopify allow text on product images?
Yes. Shopify has no equivalent of Amazon's main-image text ban. However, if your catalogue feeds Google Shopping, Google Merchant Center disapproves primary images carrying promotional text, watermarks, logos or badges, so the practical rule is to keep the featured image clean and put text on the images that follow it.
What image formats does Shopify support?
PNG and JPEG are the recommended formats. Shopify also accepts PSD, TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC and WebP, including animated GIF and WebP. Files must be under 20 MB and no larger than 5000 × 5000 px or 25 megapixels.
Square or portrait product images on Shopify?
Either works; consistency is what matters. Square 1:1 at 2048 × 2048 px is the safe default and matches an Amazon set. Portrait 4:5 at 1600 × 2000 px fills more of a phone screen and matches social crops, which suits brands whose traffic comes from Instagram or TikTok. Choose one and apply it to every featured image.
